Job description : Purpose


Whilst working as a survey assistant you will assist the surveyors collect information about the position, shape and elevation of the Earth's natural features, and map property boundaries.

You will be responsible for loading survey equipment into vehicles for transport to sites, ensuring that all necessary equipment is included and is in proper working order.

When working in the field, you may be required to set up, and occasionally operate, a range of specialist surveying equipment, which may include theodolites, levels, prisms and electronic distance measuring equipment.

They may also make use of Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment, as well as computers with land surveying software and computer-aided design (CAD) programs.

When marking out boundaries, you will commonly use wooden pegs or star pickets and hammers to drive them into the ground.

Key Accountabilities and Challenges

  • Operate within and observe all relevant and applicable laws of Panama.
  • Maintain HSE standards and ensure strict compliance within the process plant control room.
  • Performs any of following duties to assist in surveying land : Holds level or stadia rod at designated points to assist in determining elevations and laying out stakes for mapmaking, construction, mining, land, and other surveys.
  • Calls out reading or writes station number and reading in notebook.
  • Marks points of measurement with elevation, station number, or other identifying mark.
  • Measures distance between survey points, using steel or cloth tape or surveyor's chain.
  • Marks measuring points with keel, paint sticks, scratches, tacks, or stakes.
  • Places stakes at designated points and drives them into ground at specified elevation, using hammer or hatchet.
  • Cuts and clears brush and trees from line of survey, using brush hook, knife, ax, or other cutting tools.
  • May perform duties as directed by the Surveyor and Chief Surveyor.
  • May perform one operation and be designated Brush Clearer, surveying; staker, Surveying; Surveyor Helper, Chain; Surveyor Helper, Rod.
  • Control, report and reduce operational costs, and ensure cost consideration taken with all decisions.
  • Implement FQM Way culture in the Control Room team - "Bolder, Smarter, Driven, Together."
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Mine Surveyor in charge.
  • Skills, Knowledge & Experience Education High school diploma or its equivalent Skills Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

    Strong ability to work in a "team" environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to maintain self-discipline within a stressful environment.

    Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment Keen observation skills. Reporting and plan preparation To be methodical and pay attention to detail.

    Experience Minimum 2 years of experience in construction / engineering surveying and / or recognized tertiary surveying qualifications Uses instruments and equipment of a precision equal to current best industry standards and technology is to standard that accords with good engineering practice.

    Project control and set out. Reporting and plan preparation. Valid Driver's License. Language

    Fluency in English is required and proficiency in Spanish highly regarded. A willingness to undertake language training desirable.

    Behaviours Strong capabilities for planning, organizing and teamwork. Attentive to detail. Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing in Spanish.

    Working Conditions

    Cobre Panama is a remote site. The position is offered as Residential or BIBO.
