  • Design and synthesis of novel monomers and macromers for intraocular lens formulations.
  • Utilize knowledge of polymers and structure property relationships to develop next generation materials and coatings for IOLs, injectors, and ophthalmic solutions.
  • Be a hands-on experimentalist capable of executing projects with minimal oversight including prototyping, process development, and analytical characterization of devices and coatings.
  • Capable of performing chemical reactions as well as knowledge of a variety of polymerization methods. Experience with monomer formulations and the ability to run DOE’s is a plus.
  • This candidate is very detail oriented and maintains a clean and safe work environment in the laboratory
  • Work with cross functional teams in mechanical engineering, optical design, process engineering, and other departments to move projects into product development
  • Creative problem solver who generates new technology concepts and participates in intellectual property filings
  • Keep records of experiments, document key results in high quality technical reports
  • Keep up with relevant literature to stay at the forefront of surgical technology. Participate in scientific meetings and workshops and identify any potential external collaborations


    This hands on laboratory position will work on all aspects of research and development for the next generation of products for Bausch + Lomb’s Surgical Division.

  • Strong background in synthetic and polymer chemistry and analytical characterization of both small molecules and macromolecules (Gas and Liquid chromatography, SEC, NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis, Viscosity testing)
  • Experienced with a variety of polymerization reactions, including free radical and controlled free radical polymerizations, epoxy and urethane systems, and condensation polymerization.
  • Experience with the formulation of monomer mixtures to modify materials properties. Application of Design of Experiments (DOE) is a plus.
  • Experience with the mechanical analysis of polymeric systems, including viscoelastic characterization and surface lubricity properties (Instron testing, DMA, tribology) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of both the thermal and optical properties of polymeric systems (DSC, TGA, RI modification). Knowledge of optical coatings is a plus.
  • Keeps detailed records of experiments, document key results in high quality technical reports

  • Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemistry or a related field with 3-5 years of experience polymer materials development
  • Strong preference for 3+ years in a medical device industry
