Job description :
General Role Purpose (brief description of this job)
Supports the investigation and design of solutions related to the effective and efficient management of the tailings management facilities, across the different processes and their lifecycles.
Acts as the Superintendent’s 2IC and leads the team in their absence.
Qualifications (required for job) & Knowledge & Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Geology is required.
MSc in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology is highly regarded.
7 years of engineering experience in field investigation and design of civil structures.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in the design and construction of tailings facilities.
Experience in high rainfall environments.
Knowledge of water balance, surface water design and earth structures, design or modelling.
Design and management of tailings projects.
Experience in construction supervision of earth structures.
Proficiency in Seep, Slope, Plaxis or similar design software.
High level understanding of civil and geotechnical principles.
Ability to identify risks and implement effective management strategies.
Numerical and analytical skills.
Strong problem solving and organizational skills are a must.
Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in Spanish highly regarded. Willingness to undertake language training is desirable.
Core Specific Responsibilities & Expected Deliverables
Operates within and observe all relevant and applicable laws of Panama.
Maintains HSE standards and ensure strict compliance within the work area.
Responsible for the delivery of tailing civil and geotechnical designs.
Guarantees compliance with applicable design Codes & Standards.
Assists with monitoring the design, construction and management of the tailings dams.
Advanced Geotechnical Performance skills.
Capable to transfer knowledge to the rest of the team.
Provides solutions using geotechnical knowledge to solve operational problems related to tailings construction.
Manages and provides effective solutions to technical queries.
Supports the supervision of ongoing work on the Tailings Management Facilities.
Ensures that quality standards are met by implementing QA / QC methods, such as inspections and similar techniques.
Reviews and approves design drawings, and as-built drawings.
Generates and evaluates data corresponding to assigned areas, and consults (when required) with the operations staff on the interpretation of field exploration results.
Participates and represents the work area on the department scheduled meetings, such as the Project Review Meetings.
Manages, investigates and designs all aspects of the tailings facilities life cycle in the absence of the superintendent.
Designs and implements geotechnical solutions in the absence of the superintendent.
Ensures that staff cooperates and works closely with other departments to provide geological data when necessary.

Cobre Panama is a remote site. This exciting position is based on-site and will be focusing on driving and delivering operational accountability and ownership across various units at Cobre Panama site.
