Job description : Purpose


The Environmental Coordinator ensures that the environmental commitments made in the Environmental Impact Assessment (ESIA) and the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) of Cobre Panama are fulfilled.

Key Accountabilities and Challenges

  • Operate within and observe all relevant and applicable laws of Panama.
  • Maintain HSE standards and ensure strict compliance within the process plant control room.
  • Coordinate field activities to fulfil Cobre Panama's environmental management plan (EMP).
  • Ensure that the commitments described in the company's Environmental Impact Studies and the national laws applicable to the Mina de Cobre Panama Project are met.
  • Prepare, execute and follow up on the plan for inspections of the operating areas. Preparation of monthly reports on follow-up activities.
  • Coordinate training to employees and contractors in environmental matters.
  • Elaboration of operational procedures for environmental control
  • Execute and coordinate, environmental emergency activities related to the release of hazardous substances (Hydrocarbons and reagents).
  • Develop field activity plans (weekly / monthly / quarterly / yearly) to ensure compliance with the EMP and national regulations
  • Generate reports of findings and incidents in the MyCompliance system, generate and coordinate action plans against deviations and manage closures of findings in the system Ensure execution of activities.
  • Identify environmental training needs. Supervise the implementation of training for employees and contractors. Verify the effectiveness of training and awareness activities.
  • Prepare reports and records.

  • Develops operating procedures for environmental control at the Mine Site, Plant and TMF. Prepare procedures related to the EMS (Environmental Management System).
  • Ensure that procedures are followed

  • Manage the purchase and reception of materials, equipment and elements for the Environmental Department at the Mine Site, Plant and TMF.
  • Support in administrative and logistical management of the Mine Site Environmental Group.

  • Develops training plans (weekly / monthly / quarterly / yearly) to verify compliance with the EMP and national regulations.
  • Maintain training records.

  • Develop, coordinate and execute environmental operating procedures and support operating areas in considering environmental aspects in their operations.
  • Support the administrative and logistical management of the Mine, Plant and TMF site environment group.
  • Maintain an updated inventory of the quantity and conditions of materials and equipment of the Mine, Plant and TMF site environmental group.
  • Prepare reports and records of environmental performance and its improvements.
  • Manage services and contractor management for the Environmental Department.
  • Control, report and reduce operational costs, and ensure cost consideration taken with all decisions.
  • Implement FQM Way culture in the Control Room team - "Bolder, Smarter, Driven, Together."
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Environmental Manager.
  • Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Education
  • Technical or university studies in subjects related to environmental sciences or related areas.
  • Skills
  • Environmental legislation Panama especially related to hazardous waste, water quality and industrial discharges.
  • Basic knowledge in geochemistry, water chemistry and water monitoring
  • Basic experience in management and implementation of ISO 14001.
  • Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Power BI) user level.
  • Use of database systems. Preferable : use of GIS systems
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong ability to work in a "team" environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain self-discipline within a stressful environment.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Experience
  • Experience of more than 3 years in industrial operations or construction projects.
  • Experience in regulatory compliance analysis.
  • Experience in developing plans (activities, inspections, training) and in their implementation.
  • Writing technical reports.
  • Teamwork.
  • Working with partners and contractors.
  • Experience in leading environmental emergency mitigation activities.
  • Spanish.
