Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Regional Office for Central America and the Caribbean in Panama (ROPAN), Panama City.
The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Representative, ROPAN, and the overall guidance of the Senior Programme Coordinator of the Container Control Programme (CCP) (GLOG80).
The focus of the UNODC Container Control Programme is to assist law enforcement agencies to identify and inspect the high-
risk containers. Responsibilities The incumbent will in particular perform the following specific tasks :
Has knowledge of policies and practices in international drug control and crime prevention, as well as the mandates of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Has understanding of the situation in the relevant country / region related to rule of law matters. Has knowledge of and specialization in substantive and functional areas with very good research and analytical skills.
Is able to identify and contribute to the solution of problems / issues. Has knowledge of various research methodologies and sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases.
remains calm in stressful situations. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.
shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently. Education Advanced University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent), in criminology, political science, international relations, security studies or other relevant disciplines, is required.
A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).
Work Experience A minimum of two years of professional work experience in the area of law enforcement and criminal justice or a related area is required.
Experience with technical assistance activities and in project development is required.
Experience with rule of law matters in the relevant country / region is highly desirable.
Work experience within the United Nations system or similar international organization is desirable. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
For the post advertised, fluency in English and Spanish (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of other United Nations official languages is an advantage.

Filling of this position is subject to funding availability and the initial appointment will be for a period of one year.
