Job description : Purpose


As a key member of the Site Services team and reporting to the Maintenance Supervisors, the Operator is accountable for the safe driving of his allocated machine as directed by the Supervisor.

Key Accountabilities and Challenges

  • Operate within and observe all relevant and applicable laws of Panama.
  • Maintain HSE standards and ensure strict compliance within the process plant control room.
  • The applicant Operator must be capable of driving one or more of the following Heavy Equipment Machines on the project.
  • Grader : 12M, 14M, 16H & 16M

    Excavator : Various

    Dozer : D8 or equivalent

    Mechanical Broom

    Reclaimer : RM500 and RM300

    Chip Spreader.

    Tractor with 3 Side Impact Roller

    ADT (Articulated Dump Truck)

    Pneumatic Roller

    Pad foot & Smooth drum Rollers.

  • Control, report and reduce operational costs, and ensure cost consideration taken with all decisions.
  • Drive or Operate the Vehicle with or without a load on stable trafficked roadways as well as over soft unprocessed materials.
  • Reverse into work zones and correctly operate his Machine for its designed Purpose.
  • Take care of and maintain the construction vehicle.
  • The Operator must be aware of his load or vehicle weight and be able to adjust his operating style to compensate for the various weight scenarios.
  • It is the responsibility of the Operator to ensure that no damages occur to the machine i.e. no dents, scratches or knocks.
  • The Machine must be operated, parked and stored in such a way that there is no danger to it from other vehicles. The vehicle must be cleaned regularly, and its instrumentations and controls kept free from dirt.

  • A documented general inspection of the Machine must be done before the start of each shift i.e. a Pre-Start Check Sheet must be completed.
  • The oils must be checked and topped up if necessary, the various grease points must be checked and greased. The lights, tires, fuel levels and instrumentation must all be checked.

    Any irregularities must be reported to the Supervisor and the Mechanic. The Operator must also assist the Mechanic with any repairs or services that must be done

  • Implement FQM Way culture in the Control Room team - "Bolder, Smarter, Driven, Together."
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Education
  • Mechanic Knowledge (desirable)
  • Certificacions of Heavy Equipment Operations
  • Skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong ability to work in a "team" environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain self-discipline within a stressful environment.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
  • Experience
  • 2 years an Operator of Construction Department
  • Language
  • Fluency in Spanish is required and proficiency in English highly regarded. A willingness to undertake language training desirable.

    Cobre Panama is a remote site and the position is offered as Residential or BIBO.

    Safety and Environment

  • Participate and contribute to safe practice and environmental awareness.
  • Ensure all Safety and Environmental incidents are addressed & reported promptly.
  • Demonstrate personal commitment in regard to safety and environmental practices.
  • Identification of potential hazards and action that is appropriately taken.
  • Maintenance of a high standard of efficiency, safety and effectiveness.
  • Raising, discussion and resolution of safety issues at regular meetings
  • Pay special attention at the work zone to ensure that there are no overhead cables that may hook onto the Machine.
  • Ensure that there are no persons within 10m of the Machine while it is operational.
  • Look after the safety of the Machine and people in the area.
  • Ensure that the work area is clean and free of possible hazards.
  • Assist in ensuring that the team is aware of the possible hazards in the area and mitigate where possible these dangers.
  • Participate in the drafting of Risk assessments, Daily Safety task observations as well as doing Tool box talks with teams.
  • Ensure correct use of PPE.
  • Understand the emergency procedures and know the contact details of the response teams in the event of an occurrence.
  • Report all incidents including near misses to the Supervisor and Superintendent.
  • Do not allow unsafe acts and horseplay in the work areas.
  • Look out for leaks on the machine and report hydro carbon spills for correct clean up.
