Job description : Purpose
Reporting into the Supervisor, the Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design and implementation of solutions to problems of safety and operational nature in the general process plant area in a world class operating plant.
The work will be in the form of projects involving modifications to existing facilities and also involving new installations.
Key Accountabilities and Challenges
Operate within and observe all relevant and applicable laws of Panama.
Develop standard safe working procedures and actively participate in HSE initiatives.
Ensure employees work in compliance with H&S (e.g. isolation, lock out and tag out), quality and environmental standards and procedures.
Develop problem statements and solutions with end users for operational and maintenance issues.
Design solutions and participate in design reviews, hazard identifications, constructability reviews, maintainability reviews as well as installation and commissioning procedures.
Select and procure equipment in conjunction with Senior Project Engineer
Compile cost estimates of engineered solutiions.
Create and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for new equipment in conjunction with end users
Ensure that designs are fit for purpose.
Ensure designs are cost effective on a life cycle basis.
Initiate and supervise the creation of design drawings and layouts with draftsman.
Liaise the execution and implementation of the work with the other departments to minimize the impact on production.
Ensure all work is planned and scheduled via a computerized maintenance management system.
Manage the execution of construction and repair tasks in the Process Plant.
Ensure update of the database of project and construction activities of work performed.
Provide reports on project and construction activities and equipment performance.
Manage and employ best practice construction and installation techniques and procedures for the equipment that may be temporary under his care.
Undertake corrective actions through formal workplace inspections.
Review and report to Senior Projects Engineer on plant design deficiencies and equipment performance and constantly seek efficiency / operability improvements.
Enforce housekeeping and safety standards in all designated work areas.
Manage performance by setting expectations, conducting performance reviews, providing feedback and coaching to achieve business plans and production goals.
Identify training opportunities that will provide depth and versatility for employees in the team.
Coach and mentor subordinate staff through skills transfer.
Promote a positive employee environment ensuring a continuation of a solid working relationship with all employees.

Act as deputy for colleagues as required.
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Coordinator.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
A Tertiary Qualification in Mechanical or related Engineering field
Good leadership, motivational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Strong safety orientation and hazard recognition skills.
Strong cognitive and analytical skills for identifying equipment shortfalls, equipment bottlenecks and implementing corrective and preventative action plans.
Proven ability to identify, analyze and understand equipment requirements.
Strong understanding of technical, production and maintenance strategies for large-scale, continuous operating mineral processing plants.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Able to analyze data and provide clear and accurate construction performance reports in both an upward and downward direction.
Computer skills including basic design package skills required.
Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
Minimum 5 years of experience in construction or maintenance operations in heavy industry.
Minimum 1 year of leadership / supervisory experience.
Previous experience in a large, complex base metals processing plant highly regarded.
Knowledge of JDEdwards or other enterprise systems.
Fluency in Spanish is required with English language competency highly regarded.
Proven results facilitating continuous improvement activity.
Proven success in planning and organizing.
Strategic in decision making.
Cobre Panama is a remote site. The position is offered as Residential BIBO.
Work hours and rosters may vary as required by the business.
