Job description : Purpose


As a key member of the Engineering team and reporting into the Specialist Planning Engineer, the Shutdown Planner will be accountable for the coordination of all planned shutdowns of the plant specially in Mills, providing guidance and leadership to direct reports and liaising with key stakeholders in the plant.

Provide technical input into the creation of Standard Operation Procedures (SOP’s) ensuring efficient planning standards are set and followed accordingly.

Lead shutdown planning and scheduling.

Key Accountabilities and Challenges

  • Operate within and observe all relevant and applicable laws of Panama.
  • Develop standard safe working procedures and actively participate in HSE initiatives.
  • Carry out formal workplace inspections on a routine basis.
  • Ensure employees work in compliance with H&S (e.g. isolation, lock out and tag out), quality and environmental standards and procedures.
  • Manage and coordinate daily corrective actions.
  • Enforce housekeeping standards in all designated work areas.
  • Assist in creating and implementing SOP’s.
  • Liaise closely with supervisors and superintendents (Planning, Engineering & Plant) to ensure that plant equipment of a metallurgical process plant is maintained according to SOP’s (and that all machinery / equipment is maintained according to supplier recommendation and industry best practices) by providing adequate scheduled work planning.
  • Lead the team and ensure that all plant preventive and predictive maintenance plans are in accordance with the needs of the operation that activities are planned and scheduled via a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Ensure that necessary parts for shutdown requirements are available when needed through close liaison with the procurement team.
  • Provide technical support for the mechanical maintenance personnel on a daily basis to maximize production and efficiencies and optimize costs.
  • Report on maintenance activities and performance indicators.
  • Work on the creation and management of budgets for PM, upgrades (installation of new equipment) and plant parts inventory.
  • Ensure that to weekly, Monthly and Yearly look ahead plans are created and published as required.
  • Continuously improve work plans based on information from field supervisors and superintendents Assist with hiring and training of team to achieve a world class mine operation.
  • Lead shutdown planning, both long term and short term so that plant availability is maximized, contractor resources is minimized and ensure that in-house resources are fully utilized.
  • Ensure that situation awareness is clear to all relevant stakeholders during shutdown period.
  • Evaluate plant performance to identify and initiate development opportunities.
  • Review plant design for debottlenecking and efficiency / operability improvement and provide financial justification for related capital projects.
  • Provide clear work objectives and expectations of the performance levels required to achieve business plans and production goals.
  • Manage performance by setting expectations, conducting performance reviews, and providing feedback and coaching.

  • Work with line management to identify training opportunities that provide depth and versatility for all new and advancing maintenance employees.
  • Provide input to training and development needs, develop plans and establish performance metrics to meet those needs, and provide ongoing assessment tools to ensure desired results are being achieved.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Specialist Planning Engineer.
  • Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Education
  • Degree in mechanical engineering and / or a related business certificate.
  • Skills
  • Strong leadership, motivational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify and understand equipment efficiencies to recommend and implement improvements and changes to maximize operations.
  • Strong understanding of maintenance process improvement and control strategies.
  • Strong understanding of technical, production and maintenance strategies for large-scale, continuous operating mineral processing plants;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Computer fluency is a must with expertise in MS Office particularly MS Project
  • Experience
  • 5-10 years of direct experience in mechanical maintenance.
  • 3 years’ relevant supervisor experience in maintenance planning
  • Knowledge of JDEdwards or other enterprise systems.
  • Language
  • Fluency in English and Spanish highly regarded.

    Cobre Panama is a remote site. The position is offered as Residential with BIBO.
