Job description : Purpose
As a key member of the Mining team and reporting into the Shift Foreman, the Electrician Professional is responsible for the operation, inspection, maintenance and improved performance of all low voltage, medium voltage and high voltage electrical systems and associated control equipment, including Variable Speed Drives, Switchgears, Transformers, Motor Control Centers and cables.
Key Accountabilities and Challenges
Operate within and observe all relevant and applicable laws of Panama.
Develop standard safe working procedures and actively participate in HSE initiatives.
Identify, eliminate, mitigate and / or control any electrical safety condition.
Use electrically safe work Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and best industry practices.
Use industry best practices for Lock Out Tag Out safe procedures;
Read and understand electrical drawings, schematics, single line diagrams, and any other vendor supplied technical information, included but not limited to installation, operation and maintenance manuals.
Assist and / or conduct activities such as troubleshoot electric drive machinery, including transformers, power inverters, motors, capacitors, voltage regulators, medium voltage switches, and supporting hardware.
Install, maintain and repair electrical components relating to electric drive mining shovels, drills, trucks and front end loaders.
Operate various components on the medium and high voltage distribution electrical system including isolation switches, transformers, variable speed drives, switchgears and motor control centres.
Respond to troubleshooting calls and take necessary actions to bring equipment back to service.
Use personal protective gear such as hot sticks, arc flash resistant apparel, respiratory protection, and places or erects clearance tags, barricades, warning signs and devices to protect others from electrical hazards such as arch flash.
Direct and train the work of unskilled and semi-skilled electricians ensuring that proper safety practices are followed.
Operate a variety of testing, calibration and repair devices, tools and equipment including voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, insulation resistance testers, high potential test sets, circuit breaker testers, etc.
Prepare detailed estimates including labor and materials, and prepares lists of materials for improvement projects.
Maintains current knowledge of equipment and materials through self-study and training.
Prepares and maintains a variety of records and paperwork regarding work performed.
Transmit and explain work orders; may make minor changes in material needs or modifications to assigned work due to material delays or other problems.
Continuously analyze equipment efficiencies to recommend and implement improvements and changes to maximize operations.
Under supervision, serve as a work leader for maintenance crews.
Communicate work order revisions, material delays or other problems to supervisor and await further instruction.
Additionally, incumbents may have limited responsibilities for making or modifying daily work assignments.
Act as deputy for colleagues as required.
Perform any other duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Technical or technological college level degree, recognised by JTIA at electrical technician level is mandatory.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent cognitive and analytical skills for identifying maintenance corrective and preventative actions.
Proven ability to identify, analyse and understand electrical requirements.
Strong understanding of maintenance improvement and control strategies.
Strong understanding of technical, production and maintenance strategies for large-scale, continuous operating mineral processing plants.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and able to analyze data and provide clear and accurate operational maintenance performance reports in both an upward and downward direction.
Computer fluency is a must.
Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
7 years of experience in industrial, distribution, and / or generation electrical systems.
Experience directing and guiding less experienced personnel.
Practical experience with National Regulations (NFPA 70) and best industry practices including NEC, IEEE, and NFPA70E standards.
Good knowledge of electrical theory and terminology and the mathematics / basic algebra used in electrical calculations.
Experience in large AC Drive System
Experience in switchgear, medium voltage VSD and gearless drives will be an advantage.
Experience with electrical shovels, Electric rotary drills, Electric drive trucks and electric drive wheel loaders highly regarded.
Experience with movable transformer skids and trailing cables electric shoves / drills.
Knowledge of the programming of logic controllers, protection relays, VSD’s and Circuit Breaker relays will be an advantage.
Basic PLC programming, input and output cards
Fluency in Spanish is required and proficiency in English highly regarded. A willingness to undertake language training is desirable.
