Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries.
Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices.
Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.
N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.
The position is located in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbeans based in Panama City, Panama.
The incumbent reports to the External Relations Officer.
Within delegated authority, the Public Information Assistant will be responsible for the following duties :
sets up and maintains files / records, organizes meetings, monitors deadlines, etc.
generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases for the monitoring of communication activities.
write captions for UN photos.
coordinates technical arrangements and organizes and allocates space for visiting news, photo, TV and film personnel; evaluates and processes applications for UN security clearances / accreditations.
ensures that photos, graphics, etc. are appropriate and conform to UN standards for print materials.
coordinates scheduling of commercial and internal production facilities; directs studio recordings and / or evaluates audio quality of recordings for inclusion in programmes.
checking and testing for multiple browser support, etc.
shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of work.
demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in public communication, international broadcasting or related area is required
A minimum of two (2) years of experience with web-based content management systems is desirable
A minimum of three (3) years of experience coordinating with the media and producing news is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and Spanish is required.
Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
This is a project position approved for an initial period of one year. Extension of the position and of the appointment is subject to the extension of the project and related funding.
This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
