Job description : Purpose


To ensure the organization complies with current health and safety legislation approved codes of practice and guidance in relation to health and safety as well as work proactively with other managers to establish and maintain a system that promotes a culture of safe working practices across the organisation.

Key Accountabilities and Challenges

  • To ensure the day-to-day management of safety issues are addressed with the Safety Supervisor / Superintendent.
  • Operate within and observe all relevant and applicable laws of Panama.
  • Interact with all Safety Officers and assist in implementation of Safety and Health Standards in line with Corporate strategy and annual business plans.
  • Review, design and implement summarized site operational health and safety topics and procedures.
  • Attend crew toolbox meetings on a daily basis
  • Assist and partake in the formulation of the Risk Register, Risk Assessments and SOP’s for the area.
  • Monitor and review accidents and incidents and review recurrent events and assist in development and implementation of remedial actions.
  • Participate in high potential incident investigations and identify areas for improvement, and ensure relevant alerts are sent to Safety Manager for group circulation.
  • Support the organizational culture of FQM (Bolder, Driven, Smarter, Together) and actively promote it’s translation in terms of safety related activity.
  • Ensure established company health, safety policies and procedures are upheld
  • Support SHE representative meeting on a monthly basis.
  • Ensure all incidents are entered on My Compliance and daily safety reports are up to date and emailed at the earliest opportunity.
  • Ensure corrective actions are placed on My Compliance by the relevant department.
  • Perform review and feedback of incidents on My Compliance to the relevant department for close out of incidents
  • Ensure all Hazards are identified and actioned on My Compliance and close outs are complete.
  • Conduct informal daily and formal weekly safety inspections in all areas within the scope of the Site, and ensure workplace risk matrix is up to date.
  • Compile daily safety reports and ensure all close outs are closed.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Must oversee general safety behavioral surveys when required (Think, Toolbox talks etc.)
  • Must complete Safety Officers Logbook on a daily basis.
  • Skills, Knowledge & Experience


  • Tertiary qualification in Health and Safety or equivalent.
  • Skilled knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and application in a mining environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of effective health and safety management strategies and best practices
  • Registered with IDONEDAD
  • Safety Officers accredit certificate through an international recognized institution
  • Skills

  • Good leadership, presentation and motivational skills.
  • Good negotiating skills.
  • Excellent knowledge, understanding and application of industry best practice Health and Safety strategies for large-scale, continuous operational mining activities.
  • Excellent cognitive and analytical skills with understanding of Health and Safety process improvement and incident control strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and able to assemble data and provide clear and accurate reports in both an upward and downward direction.
  • Excellent project management and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Strong computers skills especially MS Office.
  • Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years safety experience within the Construction / Mining industry.
  • Knowledge of OH&S systems, preferably ISO 45001
  • Experience in safety investigations and auditing
  • Must have valid Panamanian driving licence.
  • Must be computer literate
  • Language

    Fluency in Spanish & English highly regarded.

  • Working Conditions

    Cobre Panama is a remote site. The position is offered as Residential.
