Job description : Purpose


As a member of the Process team and reporting to the Senior Metallurgist Cu Flotation, the Metallurgist Flotation is accountable for process plant operations and development to ensure optimum metallurgical performance is met in line with set targets and best practices.

Key Accountabilities and Challenges

  • Operate within and observe all relevant and applicable laws of Panama.
  • Maintain HSE standards and ensure strict compliance within their sections.
  • Implement the metallurgical process strategies associated with the flotation section.
  • Consistently deliver and exceed the main KPI’s as directed.
  • Participate in the work activities of the section on a day to day basis, serving as technical support to operations personnel to enhance plant operating performance
  • Monitor, analyze, control and report on process performance (including in-plant sampling & results).
  • Coordinate surveys, plant field trials and metallurgical test-work to evaluate circuit performance and recommend ways of improving performance.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and analysis to identify root causes and corrective actions to improve plant performance.
  • Accustomed to carrying out advanced calculations and possess ability to analyze and understand statistical metallurgical data
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to facilitate accurate transfer of information in both an upward and downward direction.
  • Ability to assemble data and provide clear and accurate analysis of plant performance.
  • Issue to and follow up on Daily Operating Instructions to the shift teams on key process parameters, trials, tasks and considerations.
  • Constantly seek out and implement innovative solutions.
  • Contribute to transference of technical skills to the national staff.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Education
  • A Tertiary Qualification in Chemical Engineering, Extractive Metallurgy or Mineral Processing or related field.
  • Skills
  • Commitment to SHEC performance
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgical process improvement and control strategies for large-scale, continuous operating mineral processing plants.
  • Good analytical skills for identifying process shortfalls, bottlenecks and implementing metallurgical testing.
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision and accountable for actions.
  • Accustomed to carrying out advanced calculations and possess ability to analyze and understand statistical metallurgical data.
  • Good cognitive and analytical skills.
  • Strong ability to work in a "team" environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain self-discipline within a stressful environment.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
  • Experience
  • Experience in complex metallurgical process operations would be highly regarded, particularly Copper;
  • Direct experience in complex metallurgist / engineering roles with specific experience in base metal crushing, milling & flotation.
  • Experience in process control systems, process information databases (ie PI Process Book) and metallurgical optimization required.
  • Language
  • Fluency in English is required and proficiency in Spanish highly regarded. A willingness to undertake language training desirable.

  • Working Conditions

    Cobre Panama is a remote site. The position is offered as Residential or FIFO with a strong preference for the incumbent to be residential.
